SPF, DKIM, DMARC & BOUNCE
– why is it important?

For us to be able to deliver email from your domain that reaches all recipients, a number of settings need to be made on your domain. Without correct and complete settings, some receiving servers stop the emails completely, and with other recipients your emails will end up in the spam folder.

Sending without correct settings harms both your domain and the IPs we send your emails from, with worse deliverability as a result. That is why we require these settings to be in place before you can send from your domain.

SPF and DKIM

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) are different methods used to authenticate sending servers. In short, the settings confirm that it is in order for email with your domain as the sender to be sent through Paloma's system.

DKIM can be set up with different security levels; we recommend a 2048-bit key, which is more secure.

DMARC

DMARC helps protect your domain from being used for phishing and spoofing, that is, someone else pretending to be you or your company. DMARC must exist and be set to at least the lowest level. If you want to set a stricter DMARC, that is okay, and if there is already a TXT record for DMARC, you do not need to change it.

Bounce domain

Many receiving servers require the address that bounce reports are sent to to match the sender address of the emails. That is why you need to set up a subdomain that receives bounces and forwards them to Paloma.

How are these settings made?

The settings are made with the company that provides your domain, for example your web host. If you have access to the domain's DNS settings, you can make the settings yourself with the help of the instructions below. If you do not have access or feel unsure, you can get help from your web host or your IT department. Unfortunately, we are not able to make these settings for you, since they are connected to your domain and outside our control.

The settings are made by adding five different DNS records to your domain. Download our PDF about important domain settings for detailed instructions.

When the settings are made, we would like you to let us know so that we can add your domain to the tool, but first you need to check that everything is right. To see whether the settings are correct, you can use our checking tool, which you can find here: https://public.paloma.se/SpfDkim/Check
