Formalization of the International EPD®system On March 1, 2009 the transition period for the International EPD®system ended. Consequently, all new PCRs and EPDs shall follow the GPI (General Programme Instructions 1.0, dated 2008-02-29) replacing the MSR 1999:2, which is not valid for use any more. This does not affect EPDs based on the MSR 1999:2 that still are valid, but all new EPDs and PCRs must follow the new requirements in the GPI. Also, a new international technical committee has been formed consisting of:
The technical committee is chaired by Joakim Thornéus, the secretariat for the International EPD®system. |

Carbon Footprint vs Climate Declaration: two tools in comparison Climate change is of high concern, driving growing demand for environmental information. Product-related estimations related to greenhouse effect and global warming are now in widespread use across the media, the government and in the business world. Carbon Footprints and Climate Declarations are two environmental tools becoming more and more recognised in the business secor. Adriana Del Borghi, Michela Gallo, Carlo Strazza, and Felice Alfieri at CE.Si.S.P., University of Genoa, Italy have written an article comparing the two tools. |

Open consultation on process certification clarification (PCC) In the General Programme Instructions – chapter 4.7 “Internal Verification (EPD process certification)” is described an activity where organisations can develop and launch EPDs without a third party certifier being involved in each case. The PCC clarifies how companies shall apply a systemised manner and specifically the demands that need to be verified by a third party verifier. As the International EPD® builds on stakeholder involvement we are happy to receive comments on the document. The document is on open consultation until September 1st 2009. Please send your comments to info@environdec.com.
